Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Capital Area Humane Society. Volunteers contribute to the success of everything we do and our animals benefit tremendously from the time and compassion they give.

Current Volunteers: All active volunteers must be scheduled for a volunteer shift prior to coming in. You can access the login screen for the volunteer portal here: https://www.volgistics.com/vicnet/115039

*We apologize, but CAHS does not provide short-term volunteer service, court-ordered community service, or restitution.
**Please note that all volunteers 18 years and older are required to submit to a background check through ICHAT. This is for the safety of our pets, children, volunteers, and staff.

Family Volunteer Requirements

  • Children between the ages of 8-15 must have a parent/guardian (21+) physically with them at ALL times. For safety reasons, one adult (21+) may only volunteer with 2 children (8-15) at a time.
  • Must attend an orientation (ALL members of the family)

Important Notes

Current Volunteers: If you are a CAHS volunteer and have not volunteered at the shelter in over one year, or you volunteered less than 10 hours in the past 12 months, you MUST attend a volunteer orientation prior to coming back to the shelter. Thank you.

Students: We cannot accommodate students who are required to fulfill short-term community service hours. CAHS will not grant community service hours to any volunteer, unless they can make the required time commitment. Once a student has been a volunteer for at least 3 months, we are happy to verify hours for school/college.

Cost: $25 per adult (16+) and $10 per child (8-15)

How to Volunteer

To become a volunteer, you must pre-register and attend an orientation. A program fee of $25 for adults (16+) and $10 for children (8-15) is due at the time of registration and allows us to provide your volunteer t-shirt, name badge, and general printed material without taking money away from the support of the animals in our care. Program fees are non-refundable. As seats are limited in each class, we are unable to reschedule missed orientation sessions more than once. For questions regarding volunteering, please contact our Community Relations Manager, Lexy Ritenburgh at [email protected].

Adult Volunteer Program – Adults must be at least 16-years-old and attend a volunteer orientation.
Family Volunteer Program – Children ages 8-15 may volunteer with a parent or guardian and must attend a volunteer orientation.

Volunteer Hours: 12-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday

*Volunteers may come to the shelter during our normal business hours only, and must schedule a volunteer shift prior to coming in. Volunteers are not allowed in the building on Sundays or any day or time the shelter is closed. You can access the login screen for the volunteer portal here: https://www.volgistics.com/vicnet/115039
