Obedience and Socialization Classes
Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) offers obedience courses that focus on building a healthy relationship between you and your dog while using positive, reward-based training methods. We also provide private lessons, as well as a kitten socialization course. All classes are listed below.

Puppy Socialization – classes are held at Tractor Supply Company. See address below.
Start your puppy off on the right paw by providing foundation training including simple cues and basic manners using positive reinforcement training. This class is limited to puppies between the ages of 2-6 months. The course will involve introductions to impulse control exercises like sit, down, and come. Puppies will be able to have some ‘play time’ that helps to provide the necessary socialization to become well-adjusted adults.

Household Manners – classes are held at Tractor Supply Company. See address below.
This class is tailored to those dogs over 6 months of age that have had little to no training. Untrained adolescents and adults will learn to focus on their guardian rather than on other distractions. Dogs will learn impulse control exercises like sit, down, come, stay, and loose leash walking. These commands are vital for dogs that have become unruly or those that need a refresher course.

We will also have time to answer any questions that pet guardians may have from both classes in order to help you with any particular problem behaviors.

Private Lessons – classes are held at the shelter.
These lessons are for dogs who were adopted from CAHS only. They are personalized, and will be tailored to fit you and your dog’s needs. Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will be asked to complete a form about what you hope to accomplish during your lesson so that we can better prepare.

To schedule a private lesson, please call the Behavior Department at (517) 626-6821 ext. 141.

Nailed It! – classes are held at the shelter.
Sometimes nail trimming can be intimidating for you and your canine friend. This is an 12-week course to help you become more comfortable and confident cutting your dog’s nails at home, making it less stressful for everyone. This class includes learning how to do force-free nail trims using a doggy nail file, muzzle training, and fun exercises to help your dog become more comfortable with handling.

Kitten Kindergarten – classes are held at the shelter.
Dogs aren’t the only ones who need early socialization and training. Kittens also benefit from early exposure to new experiences. This 3-week class is for kittens under 4-months-old and is designed to help you create a positive and lasting relationship with your kitten through the help of early socialization in a safe, relaxed environment.

Reactive Rover
Does your dog bark, growl or lunge and other dogs while on walks? This 8-week course is tailored to dogs who show reactive behaviors towards other dogs. This class will help you understand your dog’s behavior and give your dog skills to cope with stressful situations.

CAHS requires the following in order to participate in CAHS courses:

  • A copy of your dog’s current Rabies and Distemper (Da2PPL) vaccines must be provided to the trainer at the beginning of class.
  • A copy of your kitten’s current FVRCP vaccines and proof a negative FeLV test must be provided to the trainer at the beginning of class.
  • All fees must be paid for before class in order for a space to
    be provided.
  • Flat-buckle collars or harnesses are permitted with 6-foot leashes. No choke chains, prong collars, or retractable leashes.
  • Kittens must be transported in a carrier.
  • Treats that your dog loves!
